বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি  :  বিশ্বব্যাপী সাংবাদিকদের স্বার্থ রক্ষা, মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা নিশ্চিত করা এবং সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা নিয়ে কাজ করা আন্তর্জাতিক সংগঠন ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল প্রেস ক্লাব (WIPC) তাদের নতুন আন্তর্জাতিক কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটি ঘোষণা করেছে।সংগঠনের আন্তর্জাতিক বোর্ডের সভায় সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে ভারতের প্রবীণ সাংবাদিক এবং প্রেস ক্লাব অব ওয়ার্কিং জার্নালিস্টসের (নিবন্ধিত) জাতীয় সভাপতি ড. সৈয়দ খালিদ কায়েসকে আন্তর্জাতিক সহ সভাপতি পদে মনোনীত করা হয়েছে। আন্তর্জাতিক বোর্ডের সভায় নতুন কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটি ঘোষণা করা হয়। এতে বাংলাদেশের আওরঙ্গজেব কামালকে সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে আন্তর্জাতিক সভাপতি নির্বাচিত করা হয়েছে এবং   তুরস্কের  ওসমান বায়কুশকে সিনিয়র সহ-সভাপতি, আন্তর্জাতিক কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটিতে লংকা অর্কিন জার্নালিস্ট অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের সভাপতি রাঙ্গা বান্দাকান্দে কে সভাপতি,এবং ভারতের ড. সৈয়দ খালিদ কায়েসকে আন্তর্জাতিক সহ -সভাপতি হিসেবে মনোনীত করা হয়েছে। কমিটিতে  আন্তর্জাতিক বোর্ড পাকিস্তানের  মিয়ান ইশতিয়াক আলীকে আন্তর্জাতিক মহাসচিব নির্বাচিত করেছে। ভারতের বাসিন্দা জনাব সমরেশ রায়কে আন্তর্জাতিক সাংগঠনিক মহাসচিবের দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। অন্যদিকে, আফগানিস্তানের  সৈয়দ ইয়াসিন মতিনকে আন্তর্জাতিক কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটির যুগ্ম সম্পাদকের দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। আফগানিস্তানে অনুষ্ঠিত আন্তর্জাতিক সাংবাদিক সম্মেলনের সময় এসব মনোনয়ন ও নিয়োগের সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়। ড. কায়েসের এই নিয়োগকে ভারতের জন্য গৌরবের মুহূর্ত হিসেবে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে। ড. কায়েস গত তিন দশকেরও বেশি সময় ধরে সাংবাদিকদের স্বার্থ, সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা আইন এবং ডিজিটাল গণমাধ্যমের সাংবাদিকদের অধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে আসছেন। এ উপলক্ষে ড. সৈয়দ খালিদ কায়েস বলেন, “এই সম্মান আমার একার নয়; বরং ভারতের লাখ লাখ পরিশ্রমী সাংবাদিকের, যাঁরা প্রতিকূল পরিস্থিতিতেও গণতন্ত্রের চতুর্থ স্তম্ভকে শক্তিশালী করে চলেছেন। ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল প্রেস ক্লাবের মাধ্যমে আমরা বিশ্বজুড়ে সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা, কল্যাণ এবং নিরপেক্ষ সাংবাদিকতা রক্ষায় সম্মিলিতভাবে কাজ করব। বিশেষ করে আফগানিস্তান ও সিরিয়ার মতো যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত অঞ্চলে কর্মরত সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা আমাদের অগ্রাধিকার হবে। ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল প্রেস ক্লাবের আন্তর্জাতিক সভাপতি আওরঙ্গজেব কামাল বলেন, ড. কায়েসের অভিজ্ঞতা বিশ্বব্যাপী সাংবাদিকদের ঐক্যবদ্ধ করতে সংগঠনকে সহায়তা করবে এবং এশিয়ায় সংগঠনের বিস্তার ঘটবে। নতুন আন্তর্জাতিক কার্যনির্বাহী কমিটিতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, যুক্তরাজ্য, আফগানিস্তান, জার্মানি, নেপাল, বাংলাদেশ ও শ্রীলঙ্কাসহ ২৫টিরও বেশি দেশের প্রতিনিধিদের অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়েছে। উল্লেখ্য,ড. সৈয়দ খালিদ কায়েস পেশায় একজন আইনজীবী, প্রবীণ সাংবাদিক, লেখক ও চিন্তাবিদ। তিনি প্রেস ক্লাব অব ওয়ার্কিং জার্নালিস্টসের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও জাতীয় সভাপতি।সাংবাদিকদের বর্তমান অবস্থা, তাঁদের অধিকার এবং গণতন্ত্রে সাংবাদিকতার ভূমিকা নিয়ে তাঁর লেখা উল্লেখযোগ্য বইগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে— ‘গণতন্ত্রের চতুর্থ স্তম্ভ রক্তাক্ত’, ‘দেশে নিরাপদ নয় নিরপেক্ষ সাংবাদিকতা’ এবং ‘হিন্দি সাংবাদিকতা গণতন্ত্রের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর’।তাঁর নতুন বই ‘কলম এখনো বেঁচে আছে’ প্রকাশের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে বলে প্রতিবেদনে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।তাঁর জীবনদর্শন, বক্তব্য এবং ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৬ তারিখে প্রাপ্ত ‘ইন্টারন্যাশনাল পেন অব কনশিয়েন্স অ্যাওয়ার্ড’-এর সম্মাননাপত্র থেকে তাঁর চিন্তাভাবনা সম্পর্কে ধারণা পাওয়া যায়।

তাঁর মূল দর্শন হলো— বিবেকের আলোয় পরিচালিত সাংবাদিকতাই গণতন্ত্রের প্রকৃত রক্ষক।

এ কারণে সাংবাদিকদের জন্য নিরাপত্তা আইন, বিমা, পেনশন এবং ডিজিটাল গণমাধ্যমের সাংবাদিকদের স্বীকৃতি নিশ্চিত করাকে তিনি নিজের জীবনের অন্যতম লক্ষ্য হিসেবে গ্রহণ করেছেন।

তিনি বলেছেন, এই সম্মান তাঁদের সব সাংবাদিকের, যাঁরা প্রতিকূল পরিস্থিতিতেও সত্য ও নৈতিক সাংবাদিকতার পক্ষে অবিচল থাকেন।

সাংবাদিকতায় জাতি, ধর্ম ও রাজনৈতিক দলের ঊর্ধ্বে উঠে কেবল সত্যের পক্ষে দাঁড়ানোর নীতিতে তিনি বিশ্বাসী।

আফগানিস্তানে অনুষ্ঠিত আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনে ২০টিরও বেশি দেশের প্রতিনিধিদের মধ্যে তাঁকে ভারতের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করার জন্য নির্বাচিত করা হয়েছে বলে প্রতিবেদনে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। এই মনোনয়নকে একটি আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মান হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছে।

India’s Dr. Syed Khalid Qais Appointed International Vice President of the World International Press Club

The World International Press Club (WIPC), an international organisation dedicated to protecting journalists’ rights, safeguarding freedom of expression, and promoting journalists’ safety worldwide, has announced its new International Executive Committee.

 

At a meeting of the organisation’s International Board, Dr. Syed Khalid Qais, a veteran Indian journalist and National President of the registered Press Club of Working Journalists, was unanimously nominated as International Vice President.

 

The International Board also announced the composition of the new Executive Committee. Awrangzeb Kamal of Bangladesh was unanimously elected International President, while Osman Baykuş of Türkiye was appointed Senior Vice President. Ranga Bandaranayake, President of the Lanka Working Journalists Association, was appointed Vice President. Dr. Syed Khalid Qais of India was nominated International Vice President.

 

The Board elected Mian Ishtiaq Ali of Pakistan as International Secretary-General. Samaresh Roy of India was entrusted with the responsibility of International Organising Secretary-General, while Sayed Yaseen Mateen of Afghanistan was appointed Joint Secretary of the International Executive Committee.

 

The decisions regarding these nominations and appointments were taken during an international journalists’ conference held in Afghanistan.

 

Dr. Qais’s appointment has been described as a proud moment for India. For more than three decades, he has worked tirelessly to advance journalists’ interests, strengthen legal protections for journalists, promote their safety, and establish the rights of digital media professionals.

 

On the occasion, Dr. Syed Khalid Qais said:

 

“This honour does not belong to me alone; it belongs to millions of hardworking journalists across India who continue to strengthen the fourth pillar of democracy, even under adverse circumstances. Through the World International Press Club, we will work collectively to protect journalists’ safety and welfare and uphold impartial journalism around the world. In particular, the safety of journalists working in war-torn regions such as Afghanistan and Syria will remain one of our priorities.”

 

Awrangzeb Kamal, International President of the World International Press Club, said that Dr. Qais’s experience would help strengthen the organisation’s efforts to unite journalists worldwide and expand its presence across Asia.

 

The newly formed International Executive Committee includes representatives from more than 25 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Germany, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

 

Dr. Syed Khalid Qais: A Lawyer, Veteran Journalist, Author and Thinker

 

Dr. Syed Khalid Qais is a lawyer, veteran journalist, author and intellectual by profession. He is the founder and National President of the Press Club of Working Journalists.

 

Among his notable books addressing the condition of journalists, their professional rights, and the role of journalism in democracy are The Fourth Pillar of Democracy Is Bloodied, Impartial Journalism Is Not Safe in the Country, and Hindi Journalism: The Foundation Stone of Democracy.

 

His forthcoming book, The Pen Is Still Alive, is also reportedly in the planning stage.

He has stated that the honour belongs to all journalists who remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and ethical journalism despite challenging circumstances.

 

He believes that journalism must rise above differences of nationality, religion, and political affiliation and stand firmly on the side of truth alone.

 

4. Unity Is Strength

 

Dr. Qais believes that an isolated journalist may be vulnerable, but journalists who stand together can question even those in positions of power.

 

Guided by this philosophy, he has worked to develop the Press Club of Working Journalists into an organisation with a nationwide presence across India, bringing together journalists from different regions through its executive committee and organisational structure.

 

In essence, his life philosophy can be summarised in these words:
